Why CH4K?

Dear Partners,

I was recently asked why I started CH4K and I realized I hadn’t made it clear on the site. The interview explains it (on the News & Events tab), but here it is up front.

College Hoodies 4 Kids (CH4K) came from a “download” from the Lord. You see, I was literally driving out of my neighborhood when I noticed a young Black girl in a college hoodie. I don’t remember the college but I remember being proud of her and thinking: when you see a kid in a college hoodie, you see a kid with a future! At that moment, CH4K came to be.

I started CH4K in 2012 with the support of my husband. We have been blessed with donations of college hoodies and funds from family, friends, strangers and colleges. We have encouraged kids from Kindergarten to Seniors to know they have a future and that college can be a great path towards it. Our focus has always been on minority or low-income kids because often those are the ones that aren’t seen as having a worthy future. We want each to know they do. We have recently determined that our focus will switch from K-12 to tweens and teens as that is where we believe we will have the greatest impact.

We are so grateful for what we have been able to accomplish since 2012 and with a renewed focused, we hope to continue to clothe both minority and low-income kids in college apparel and encourage them into their futures! We hope you will join us.
